Vector vs Bitmap

The example above shows the clear differences between vector and raster/bitmap.

The major benefit of having a vector file is that it can be scaled and resized infinitely without any loss of quality or definition. Vector files are normally generated in such software as adobe illustrator and saved in file formats such as (ai, eps and pdf).

With a bitmap when you try to make a logo bigger the whole image can become slightly blurred and “bitmapped” as the pixels become bigger the edges step out and you lose the sharpness. For more detailed information on supplying bitmap files see Understanding DPI and file size.

Understanding DPI and file size

When supplying images or logos in raster/bitmap format it is important to first understand how these files are made up.

Firstly DPI (dots per inch) refers to the number of dots in a printed inch otherwise known as resolution. Low resolution images are normally around 72 DPI (screen resolution commonly found on google images) Higher DPI means higher resolution and for printing purposes should be 300DPI.(Commonly found on photo stock library websites)

PLEASE NOTE

The physical file size is also an important factor to consider when providing files.

We require bitmap files to be supplied at 300dpi and at minimum 25% of the final printed size.

Example. If a logo is to be printed to 600mm x 600mm the physical file size must be at least 150mm x 150mm.

If in any doubt please contact us for clarification of artwork you wish to use.

If you want to use your own designs, logos and photos ensure the content you send is of a high quality. We require logo artwork to be supplied as vectorised files and photos must be originals and high resolution.
